02.02.2010  Delegation of University of the Massachusetts at Amherst pays visit to the Novgorod State University.

On February 1-4, 2010, three representatives of the University of Massachusetts at Amherst – Richard Taupier, Associate Director for International Research, Joseph B. Berger, Chair of Educational Policy, Research and Administration, and Dr. David Buchanan, Director of the Institute for Global Health – visit NovSU within the framework of the United States – Russia Project “Advancing Theory and Knowledge in Public Health Sciences on Global Health Issues”.

During the first day of the visit (February 1, 2010), the UMass delegation met with Prof., Dr. Mikhail Pevzner, Vice-Rector for International Affairs, Denis Kovalenko, Head of Research Centre, Irina Alexashenkova, Head of Department of International Affairs, Elvira Kaminskaya, Head of International Academic Programs, and Natalia Ilyashenko, Head of Information and Analysis. The purpose of the meeting was discussion of the project activities planned for 2010.
    
Discussion on the project planning issues was continued during the meeting with the Rector of NovSU, Prof., Dr. Viktor Veber.

Today, on February 2, UMass representatives visited Institute of Medical Education for the further development of the project plan for 2010. Students of the Institute of Medical Education prepared presentation of their Alma Mater for the US guests.

On February 3, the UMass representatives will visit  the Center for AIDS and Infections Disease Prevention „Helper“, the Narcological Center, and the Oncological Centre of Veliky Novgorod.
The Round Table planned at 3:00 pm will cover and discuss the following issues of Public Health and Global Health:

  • Public Health and Global Health Issues in the North-West Region of Russia.
  • HIV-infection  in the Novgorod Region.
  • Influence of Alcohol and Drug Abuse on the Health Deterioration of the Novgorod Region Population.
  • Oncological Diseases in the Novgorod Region, etc.
