20.11.2014  Round table discussion “Media Image of Russian Residing in Neighboring Countries” at the NovSU Department of Journalism

Sergey Mazur

On November 18, a round table discussion “Media Image of Russian Residing in Neighboring Countries” took place at the NovSU Department of Journalism. A historian, journalist and chairperson of SEMINARIUM HORTUS HUMANITATIS association (Riga, Latvia) Sergey Mazur was a moderator of the table. Sergey Mazur said, “An image of Russian segregated from a traditional environment might be very interesting for Novgorodian journalism from сulturological point of view. I’m pretty sure, that some Novgorodians, especially young generation, migrate in search of job or better life.

From Latvia’s point of view, the theme could have been invoked by a publication about a reporter, and a Eurodeputy Andrey Mamykin, who contrasted ideologically biased image of Latvia’s Russian to Russia’s Russian (http://www.regnum.ru/news/1808860.html).

That was not the first case - some of the notable Latvian journalists and even people from academic circles had already presented cliché perception of local Russians, however without any prior research in the field.”

The students and journalists, who participated round table discussion, were interested to learn not only about media but about social reality as well: attitude to Russian language in Latvia, teaching in Russian language and observance of rights of Russian-speaking population. The event ended with lively debate.
