11.11.2014  NovSU Exploratory Visit of Professors from Reich College of Education, Appalachian State University (North Carolina, USA)

On 8 November, a NovSU exploratory visit of Professor Barbara Howard and Professor Sara Zimmerman from Reich College of Education, Appalachian State University began.

The working part of the visit began on Monday, November 10, with an official meeting with the Vice-Rector for International Affairs, Professor Mikhail Pevzner and Head of Office of International Affairs Natalia Shaydorova. They discussed ways to develop cooperation in the field of Education and Educational Leadership. It was agreed to hold a Study Aboard Program for a group of graduate students of Reich College of Education, Appalachian State University, enrolled in Educational Leadership in spring 2015. During the program, AppState students will visit educational institutions of Veliky Novgorod, work shadow principals and administrators at host schools, have a workshop where American and Russian teachers and master students exchange their experience, etc.

In the afternoon, the American professors delivered presentations to the students and faculty members of the NovSU School of Continuous Pedagogical Education. Prof. Sara Zimmerman gave an overview of the US-education system for 4th year Bachelor degree students and 5th year Specialist program students. She also told about a long experience of inclusive education in American educational institutions. The presentation aroused great interest among NovSU students who have been more familiar with the educational system of Great Britain. At the stage of question-answer, presentation very quickly turned into a discussion and comparison of the educational systems of both countries.

Prof. Barbara Howard told master students and faculty members of NovSU Psychology and Education Faculty about principal preparation program at Appalachian State University and invited the audience to participate in her online classes conducted on the basis of the virtual world OpenQwaq. OpenQwaq allows having online classes with students who live in different cities, creating the impression of their physical presence and interaction in the class.

During Tuesday, November 11, Prof. Barbara Howard will present a project implemented by her master students " Designing the Ideal Learning Space for the 21st Century" for students and faculty members from NovSU from Psychology Department.

During the visit, representatives of the Appalachian University will visit the University Gymnasium No 1. Named after Vladimir Soroka, a preschool department of the secondary school "Complex "Harmony"" and a university dormitory.
