16.11.2013  Hookah is more dangerous than a cigarette

Future doctors discussed the problem of smoking among university students

On 15 November, NovSU School of Medical Education students discussed smoking issues. As noted by Tatyana Borisova, the Vice-Dean of Faculty of General Medicine, such conferences are held annually, especially for the first-year students. “As all students in our country do, they come to us with bad habits. Later, they can change their attitude. That is why we organize such events for them to think: to keep up this way of life or change it if they have chosen the Faculty of General Medicine," she said and added that there is another problem arising among young people – hookah addiction. "This problem is very serious: while smoking hookah, you smoke thirty cigarette instead of one at once," she explained.

Different videos, presentations and reports prepared by the students were presented during the meeting. In addition, everyone could get acquainted with the book exhibition "Lifestyle and bad habits" which traveled around classrooms of School of Medical Education during the week.

The educational conference "Intelligent Capabilities of the Brain" was held by the Student Scientific Society and young scientists of the NovSU School of Medical Education to continue the theme of giving up smoking. The participants discussed such topics as types of intelligence, food and intelligence, relaxation techniques and ability to remember information. For instance, a fourth-year student of the Faculty of General Medicine Irina Antonenko reported about some interesting facts of human memory: "Scientists proved that people could get and remember information while being in the womb. Before that, newborn babies were believed to have their memory as clean as a sheet of paper."
